Overview
As part of the ETEC665 Introduction to Digital Media in Education course, my classmate and I were tasked with the production of a short explainer video for JELL-O. The intended aim of the explainer video is to promote the JELL-O products by introducing a simple, new recipe to existing and new consumers in Canada and the U.S. We envisioned this video to be distributed via the company’s website and social media along with the recipe and product description.
The Process
We began by drafting a proposal for the video, which outlined the target audience, objectives and the visual/auditory style to be used in the video. We wanted to stay on brand and tell the story in a playful and engaging way. To achieve this goal, we decided to pull inspiration from stop motion animation technique.
Once we determined the objectives, the overall feel and the style of the video, we created a storyboard to organize our thoughts visually and to determine the shots we need to capture, before jumping into production.
The Challenges
The biggest challenge we faced during the filming process was controlling the camera positioning and lighting in a makeshift home studio setup. Without access to adequate lighting and equipment (i.e., to stabilize the camera), we had to get creative in our approaches. We were not able to capture as many variety of shots as we wished and struggled to establish a steady, focused frame in some instances.
Nevertheless, we compensated for these limitations in our post-production process. Applying a variety of filters, lighting adjustments and keyframe animations, we created smooth transitions and visual consistency from one scene to another. Furthermore, with use of sound effects and background music, we effectively added emphasis to the visuals in the video.
