Overview
For the final project for the ETEC669 Designing and Developing Interactive Instruction course, I was given the opportunity to work with two wonderful colleagues on an exciting educational documentary project. We chose to explore the concept of “Learning in Living Spaces” and interviewed subject matter experts on living spaces, makerspaces and hackerspaces to explore their potential as learning spaces.
Design Process
The design process was a true reflection of our team work and collaborative iteration. As a team, we solidified the project concept and drafted an initial proposal that contained project details, target audience, learning objectives, brand identity and user personas.
Once the proposal was approved, we worked on developing a draft for the remaining sections of the proposal, namely functional and content requirement, information architecture, wireframe, storyboard and style guide. Each team member took the lead on different sections of the proposal, which was then reviewed and revised collectively through weekly check-in meetings.
The biggest challenge and learning opportunity during the design process was to determine the appropriate scope for our learning program. While we initially planned to explore three unique learning spaces, we determined that it would cause significant scope creep and decided to stick to two contrasting spaces (makerspace and hackerspace) for which we had established contacts.
Filming, Editing and Programming
The filming process took place over the course of two weeks. With 9 interviews to film and edit and static slides to design and program on Klynt, we created a project calendar and a kanban board to allocate work and track the progress.
Once the interview was filmed, we divided the editing work and post-production work amongst the team members. I was responsible for creating the introduction and conclusion videos and user interview videos, most of which involved combining two or more videos. The challenge here was to create smooth transitions between different video clips to create one, cohesive story. To facilitate the editing process, I generated audio transcript of the videos using Adobe Premiere Pro and performed thematic analysis of the content to organize the flow of the video prior to producing the video.
Experience the course
Our learning program received excellent feedback from our classmates and from the instructor, particularly concerning our attention to detail, flow, thoroughness, thoughtfulness and creative use of the software. I hope you also enjoy the experience of exploring the program.
